New realities and challenges confront the region. State collapse, sectarian conflicts, authoritarian resilience, stifled civil societies, economic devastation, soaring unemployment, the emergence of new regional actors are but some of the existing developments facing the region. Alongside these challenges, there are new opportunities as well. Societies are far more committed to principals of social justice. And civil societies and organizational life are at forefront of many debates. This conference will bring together academics, policy makers and intellectuals to discuss these most pressing issues.

Professor Al-Hardan will discuss the findings from her latest book "Palestinians in Syria: Nakba Memories of Shattered Communities" (Columbia University Press, 2016).
